The Flash clock at the old Tuttle’s Corner.
People have asked me about the Flash clock that is used to be in the upper right hand corner of the page at tuttlescorner.com. They point out that it only shows the correct time if you are on Pacific Standard Time (GMT/UTC +8/9:00), and that Tuttle’s Corner isn’t on the west coast. They ask me if there is some special significance to a clock that displays time in world cities relative to Pacific Standard Time. They ask me to justify my use of a clock that not only displays what is most likely the incorrect time in four different cities, but uses more than its fair share of CPU cycles on people’s computers.
It’s my sentimentality that’s to blame.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, but the second half of my life has been all New York. Am I a New Yorker? A few years ago, in a limo out to Kennedy being driven by a guy who’s lived in Queens his whole life, I get to explaining where I’m flying (L.A.), and why. Normal conversation for a drive like this. He tells me that when I got in to his car, he was sure I was a New Yorker which is something I’ve never actually been sure of, myself. He asks me how long I’ve been living in New York and I tell him, twenty years, but I’m not sure if that makes me a New Yorker, and he says, “Twenty years? Shit, you’re a New Yorker.”
So that’s it, really. That’s why I picked this clock: I’m still on L.A. time, New Yorker or not.
The truth is that I’ve spent hours trying to fix the fucking clock, el pinche reloj. I’ve looked at many hundreds of other Flash clocks with which to replace it. I’ve looked into creating my own Flash clock. I don’t even like Flash. There isn’t another Flash element anywhere on hobotrain network. I’ve looked at replacing the clock with HTML 5 scripts. I’m sure they’d work well enough. The trouble is that they would invalidate my markup, and I’ve spent more time getting my markup to validate than I have en el pinche reloj, so in the end, the clock stays. Notice that for all of its idiosyncrasies, it still adjusts to Daylight Savings twice a year.
