One writes to become someone other than who one is. You know, for him, writing was that. There’s a beautiful passage in which he said that after his first book he expected that the next morning there would be rays of light streaming from his person and that everyone on the street would be able to see that he had written a book. I imagine that someone who’d quit smoking would feel similarly greeting the new day bathed and laundered and expecting all the world to recognize their accomplishment.
